The cost of holding still

A clock is a device for making a system agree to be somewhere definite at regular intervals. Everything about a digital computer that makes it reliable — the discipline of the clock edge, the voltage margins, the refresh, the error correction — is a continuous act of suppression against a substrate that would otherwise drift, settle and blur. We do not usually count that as computation. It might be most of what the machine is actually doing.
